Scarifying – What Benefits Will It Bring to Your Lawn?

Why Scarify Your Lawn?

In the UK, we’re rightly proud of our fabulous lawns, with our temperate climate and perfect soil types making them amongst the finest in the world.

However, despite the optimal conditions, achieving a stunning lawn doesn’t happen by magic - you’re probably going to need some mechanical help from a range of lawncare machines.

In this article we are going to look at scarifying and why it is so beneficial.

What Does a Scarifier Do?

A mechanical scarifier – or powered lawn rake – looks not unlike a mower, except, rather than cutting the grass, it employs a series of sprung tines or fixed blades to hook onto and drag out any suffocating accumulation of moss, thatch and laterally growing rhizomes from the lawn surface.

This done, water, air and essential nutrients will have improved access to the turf’s root system, in turn encouraging vigorous, verdant grass growth.

When Should I Scarify?

Scarifying is a rather ‘invasive’ process; one from which the grass will need to recover before it starts to thrive. This being the case, it’s best to scarify in spring, when the increasing temperatures and showery weather will have time to work their magic before the hot, parched summer months arrive.

Before scarifying, do check the ground conditions are suitable – the positive effects of scarifying will be limited if the grass is too wet or too dry.

Be aware that scarifying leaves debris strewn across the lawn. Our CAMON scarifiers have the option of a collection bag, but if you do not have this facility then it can be raked-up by hand, corralled with a blower, or collected by your ride-on mower or garden tractor.
