Wildflower Management Machinery
Wildflowers are an incredible conservation tool, through their ability to offer ideal habitat for a huge number of insects and animals.
To avoid a wildflower meadow becoming overrun with grass, the cutting and management of wild flowers is crucial to ensure that seeds can germinate each year.
Cutting wild flowers in the autumn with machines that do not destroy the seeds heads is essential; as is the taking away of the cut material to avoid providing nutrients to more aggressive grass varieties.
We have outlined below the range of machines that can be helpful in managing wildflower meadows of different sizes; from creating a surface into which wildflower seeds can be planted to the cutting and clearing of the flowers at the end of the summer.
Please do not hesitate to contact us on 01444 247689 if you would like to talk about any of these options.
Power Scythes
Power Scythes are an extremely common method of cutting wild flower meadows in the Autumn months. The cutting action of the oscillating teeth ensure a clean cut even of vegetation up to 1" in diameter. Capable of cutting very tall flowers and grass, these machines can work on uneven ground and slopes and as they are all gear driven, they make the work very simple for the operator.
BCS Power Scythes are available in a selection of different engine sizes and cutting widths, from 80cm to 155cm. They are also multi-purpose machines that enable you to change the cutting head for additional attachments so that you can do more than one job with the machine.

Disc Mowers
The cutting head of a Disc mower consists of a large circular disc with typically 2 to 4 free swinging blades. The blades are normally open and allow any cut grass to fall away from the machine without further cutting and avoids the destruction of the seed heads.
The Alhambra Mower we offer has a 60cm cutting width and three working speeds plus a reverse gear. This is an extremely cost effective product for managing small wild flower meadows and is a very user friendly mower to operate.
Hay Rakes
Once a wild flower meadow has been cut, it is not unsual to leave the vegetation where it fell for several days to give the seed heads a chance to release their seeds.
It is however important to remove the cut material as allowing it to decompose on the meadow will only provide nutrients for unwanted grasses that will overwhelm the wildflowers.
Hay rakes are the best way to clear large areas of cut grass from a field, as they sweep fallen vegetation into neat rows very quickly and efficiently. It is also possible to move 4 rows into one larger row to make the collection of the grass even easier.
The Hay Rakes we sell fit onto the range of BCS Two Wheel Tractors and Power Scythes.
Buck Rakes
Buck Rakes are another method of collecting the large amounts of vegetation that is left after being cut on a wild flower meadow.
They are quite simple products to use, as they rely on the drive from a power unit but they can prove to be very effective at moving large bundles or rows.
The Artio Buck rake is an attachment for BCS Two Wheel Tractors and Power Scythes and they can be adjusted for different angles and for the different wheel sizes of the power units.
Mini Balers
A mini baler allows you to collect and wrap rows of cut grass into bales that can be stored and used for later applications. It is therefore an excellent tool for groups who are looking at managing every aspect of a conservation project in a sustainable way.
The CAEB mini baler has proven itself to be an extremely reliable product over the many years we have been selling it, and whilst the operation looks complicated at first, it is actually easy to master and to produce useful tight bales.
Scarifiers
Creating a wild flower meadow consists of removing as much grass and vegetation as possible so that the wild flower seeds can flourish. Scarifying deeply is one way to not only remove grass but also to open "scratches" into the area so that wild flower seed can germinate.
The BC65 Scarifier is an attachment that fits onto BCS Two Wheel Tractors and Power Scythes and is able to utilise the power of the large engines to effectively scarify large areas. With the scarifier being fitted onto a driven power unit, it also takes the strain off the operator.
